SANA'A, April 3 ) Two people were killed and another three badly injured in a Sunday afternoon traffic accident when a Toyota taxi drifted off the road and overturned in Hadda area, west of the capital.

Eyewitnesses attributed the accident to heavy rains causing the driver to lose control of the car which overturned on the roadside.

Police immediately rushed to the accident site and took victims to the hospital. Patrol captain Abdullah Hussein Al-Quladhi said high speed and heavy rains caused the accident. The driver drifted off the road and lost control of the vehicle, colliding with a roadside electrical post. He added that the victims were pedestrians.

Yemen's Interior Ministry revealed in its annual report that a traffic accident occurs every 55 seconds.

Asked by Parliament last Saturday about the causes for traffic accidents increasing nationwide, Abdullah Al-Shabil, Traffic Department General Director, said, “Lack of traffic policies ensuring road safety, high speed and lack of car maintenance, coupled with issuing driver's licenses to teenagers and drivers violating traffic laws, are the primary reasons for traffic accidents.”
