3.5 million in US aid for Yemen’s health system [Archives:2004/699/Local News]

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Public Health and Population, the Public Works Project, and the Embassy of the United States of America last Monday. According to this 6-month project, entitled “Al-Jawf and Shabwa Health Services Support Project,” which will start on January 1, 2004, the US Embassy will provide Yemen $3.5 million.
The aim of the project is to provide accessible health services to the inhabitants of the remote areas of Al-Jawf and Shabwa by rehabilitating existing health institutions through renovation, expansion, and equipping; by constructing new health institutions; and by training health-related personnel.
During the ceremony, both the Ambassador of the USA, Mr. Edmund Hull and Yemeni Health Minister Dr. Mohamed Al-Nomi gave speeches in which they asserted on the importance of such projects in developing healthcare services for those who are in deep need for them.
-US assistance in Yemen has been concentrated in providing funding for infrastructure services in education and health, especially for more deprived governorates such as Mareb, Shabwa, Al-Jawf, etc.
Based on the memorandum, in the Al-Jawf Governorate, the Ragooza health center, the Alkhalk health center, the Alzaher health center, the Kharab Almarashee health center, the Barat Al-Anan hospital, the Al-Matamah health center, the Al-Matoon health center, and the Khub Washaf health center will be renovated and equipped, and the Alghail health center and the Almasloob health center will be equipped. The project will also build and equip the governorate's health office as well as a mother and child health center in Al-Hazim.
In the Shabwa Governorate, the Al-Dafeeah Hospital, Baihan, will be reconstructed and equipped and the Ausailan Hospital will be equipped.
