A strong explosion hit the governorate of Lahj last Friday. Eyewitnesses told YT the explosion which took place near the security office building in the heart of the city resulted from an explosive that was planted in a rubbish box. The explosion caused no damage except to the neighboring houses. This is the third explosion in Yemen since last Sunday, when an explosion took place in the city of Aden, near the presidential palace at the eve of the 38th anniversary of the October Revolution. President Saleh took part in these celebrations held in Aden. Another explosion was reported last Monday, but official sources denied it. Both caused no harm. Observers believe the aim of this explosion is to convey a particular message to authorities.
Police are now carrying out an arrest campaign in Aden, focusing mainly on Islamic extremists who are believed to be behind recent explosions, in order to inform the government that they are still there. Sources said over 20 people have been arrested and are being interrogated.
