archive
April 2 2001

Nine villagers, including two women, were killed in the Haraz region 90 km northwest of the capital, Sanaa last week. Reliable sources told YT that the killings were caused by a dispute over a woman who refused to return to her husband. The dispute led to an exchange of gunfire from within houses through the windows of other houses .This exchange resulted in the killing of the two innocent women who were not involved in any way in the conflict ,along with seven men.
Sheikh Ali Al-Qanis and other mediators exerted efforts to contain the problem but to no avail.
The conservative traditions in such areas usually govern marriages resulting in disputes which reflect negatively on family and society.
