Yemen’s Braindrain Grows [Archives:1997/47/Front Page]

Since the beginning of this year, the Republic of Yemen has lost some 1,32 0 of its best qualified young people. It is called the braindrain. Physicians, engineers, pilots, economists,aaccountants, artists and university professors are among those who have been lost. Economic hardships and political uncertainty are cited as the main reasons. Destinations vary depending on the background, age structure and qualifications. Destinations are also determined by the fact of whether the emigre wants to come back or not. Many qualified people who are still in Yemen are here simply because they have not yet found the right opportunity to leave. Conditions are expected to get worse before they will improve.
