Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue Installed in Aden [Archives:2001/14/Local News]
April 2 2001

On this occasion, Mr. Suman told Yemen Times that the celebration attended by the Aden Governor and Officials from Aden is a clear indication of the unique and historic relationship between India and the City of Aden in particular, and Yemen in general.
“The ceremony is aimed at externalizing the memories of Gandhi during his visit to Aden in the 1940s. He stayed in the city for some time before heading to the UK to attend the Constitutional Conference regarding the Independence of India”, Mr. Suman said.
Members of Yemeni and Indian community in Aden raised the pedestal on which the Bust was placed.
The sculpture will stand as a constant reminder to all Yemenis of the principles of tolerance and non-violence, which Mahatma Gandhi championed throughout his life.
