Dr. Al-Qubati won two prestigious awards last week. The first was the Shousha Prize, named after Dr. A. T. Shousha who was the first president of the World Health Organization in the Middle East.
Dr. Al-Qubati won the prize for his contribution to fighting leprosy in Yemen, and his outstanding medical record in fighting endemic diseases.
This is the 38th prize of its kind, since the first one in 1966. And this is the first time a Yemeni wins it. The rewarded is selected through research and consultation among the Arab Health Ministers during the annual meeting of the committee members.
Dr. Al-Qubati has dedicated his practical life for curing leprosy and worked in several foreign countries such as Indonesia, Libya, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.
In 1998 he established the National Program for Eradicating Leprosy, then he worked as a consultant at the Ministry of Health since 2000.
This is not the first award that Dr. Al-Qubati received in his practical life, for he has won many prizes and awards; he won the Hael Saeed award in 1996, and Yemen Times Person of the Year in 1998.
And he will be receiving his prize in a special ceremony to be attended by the Arab Health Ministers in September 2003.

Saskawa prize for Yemen Society for Eradicating Leprosy
The Yemeni Society for Eradicating Leprosy, chaired by Dr. Ahmed Hael Saeed, its secretary-general Dr. Al-Qubati, has won the Shousha International Prize.
The Saskawa prize is named after a Japanese businessman who served against the English occupation in his country, and exerted efforts for fighting smallpox. The prize is awarded annually to any establishment that is active in fighting a particular disease. The $ 80,000 worth prize will be awarded partially to Yemen, for the first Time to an Arabian country, and partially to Philippines.
Dr. Ahmed Hael Saeed will be receiving the award on behalf of the society in Geneva next May.
In a statement to the Yemen Times, Dr. Al-Qubati praised the efforts of the Yemeni Society for Eradicating Leprosy, especially in field programs and training the local Yemeni cadre in this field.
He also praised the National Program for Eradicating Leprosy and its continuous efforts in fighting this disease especially Dr. Abdulraheem Al-Samiy.
