Yemen and Syria have signed an agreement on a common mechanism for implementation and application of an agreement of passenger and goods overland transportation. The agreement aims at strengthening bilateral relations in trade in context of the two sides' keenness on upgrading mechanism of joint Arab action in economic, tourism and investment fields. Signing the agreement on the joint mechanism came at the conclusion of meetings of he technical committee for transport held in Damascus lately. The meetings came out with positive results in implementation of the resolutions taken by the joint higher committee that had held its meetings in the Syrian capital on 26-27 January 2003.
During the meeting of the technical committee for overland transport an agreement was reached stipulating that the Yemeni and Syrian transport ministries should form a special committee to follow up implementation of the joint mechanism in this regard. Regarding air transport the joint technical committee agreed to hold a direct meting grouping representatives of both civilian airways organisations and representatives of both carriers in the two countries to discuss the memorandum submitted by the Yemeni side. The committee confirmed the necessity of rapid communication for fixing venue and time of the specialists meeting. The Yemeni side received a copy of a draft project for sea transport addressed to the Yemeni foreign ministry.
Yemen expects from the implementation of overland transportation agreement with Syria to increase trade and tourist exchange between the two countries and facilitate trade transactions and transporting of goods. Yemen imports Syrian-made clothes and industrial products that are largely popular in Yemeni markets. Yemen had signed with Saudi Arabia and Jordan on implementing mechanisms for facilitating streamline of the movement of passenger and goods transport movement with Arab countries and to speed up the project of establishing the great Arab free trade zone.
