A collection of rare plants have been compiled in a guidebook Wild plants from Yemen [Archives:2002/25/Last Page]

Yemen has been bestowed with a botanical biodiversity scattered in every part of Yemen.
Botanical researches have shown that there are 2810 different kinds of rare indigenous plants in Yemen.
More than 415 of rare plants can not be found in any other part of the world except Yemen. Among these more than 236 are found in Socatra island, botanical researches indicated.
The botanical biodiversity in the island plays a significant role in the daily life of Yemenis in general and people in Socatra in particular. Some of these rare plant are used in medical properties.
In this respect, Environment Protection Authority has issued a guidebook where different rare plants are recorded in the island.
The book contains 200 different kinds of plants along with a short description of places where they are naturally grown.
It deals with botanical regions in Yemen in different areas including,
-Coastal plains where different shrubs and plants such as, acacia ehrenbergiana, halopyrum, and other are indigenously grown in the island.
-The Tihama highlands and the Western mountain chains adjacent to the Red Sea where different plant are grown naturally here such as, acanthus arboreus, osteospermum, polygala and ficus.
– The plants of eastern mountains and desert
-The plants of Socatra island.
