A journalist in Cairo [Archives:2002/30/Focus]
BY HASSAN AZZAEDI
I was one of the Yemeni journalists invited to Egypt for attending a training course for journalists. The training course was sponsored by al-Ahram newspaper Regional Institute for Media held on June 16 to 24, 2002.
My impressions about the institute in general and Egypt in particular had its moments that can not be erased from my memory.
Egypt, the Mother of the world, as it is described by Egyptians, has been progressing by leaps and bounds in every aspect of life, social, political, cultural and economic.
Egypt has witnessed dramatic changes in the field of journalism and media. Undoubtedly, the progress of any country has to be accompanied by progress of media and journalism and free men-of-letters.
Al-Ahram tour
In this spot, al-Ahram Regional Institute for Media, is the first place to visit. This institute was established in 1875. More than one million copies have been published. The institute embraces a number of Egyptian intelligentsia and famous men-of- letters. Lectures were delivered for the Yemeni trainees on the art of proper editing.
We were warmly welcomed by its staff. I can say that a strong base for al-Ahram has been firmly established to cope with Western challenges that encounter the Arab World.
Media City
We have paid also a short visit to the City for Media Production. It was inaugurated by the Egyptian president. It is considered to be the a starting- point for limitless media in Egypt. The third world countries have been facing media flow unparallel to their capacity to cope with and that is why is has been a necessity to establish the Media City.
This vital center comprises films and series production. It is also the center for providing other Arab television channels with televised materials.
Day in Ismaelia
During our visit to Cairo, we also paid a visit to Ismaelia. We were warmly welcomed by its Governor. The Governor had a pioneering role in defending the 26 September Revolution in Yemen.
We got acquainted with a lot of things about the struggle of both Egyptians and Yemenis to establish the republican system and the end of the Imams rule in Yemen.
In addition to this, the city has unforgettable stances when the Egyptians destroyed and crossed the impregnable military line Barlev built by the Israeli occupation while they were occupying the Egyptian land of Sinai.
That time, the Egyptians proved to the world their strong belief in their country and its land.
The city of Ismaelia has witnessed a considerable progress in the fields of tourism, commerce and industry.
We have come out with a lot of deep impressions, but there is no room for writing deep details about this marvellous experience we have had. To put it in a nutshell, we can say that the Egyptians made the history in the Arab World. We are indeed thankful for those who cooperated with us and offered us the warm hospitality, the Egyptians renowned of, during our visit and stay in Cairo.
