Al-Barakani accuses opposition parties of crippling elections [Archives:2002/35/Front Page]
In an interview with Yemen Times to be published in full next week, Mr. Sultan Al-Barakani, the Chairman of the General People’s Congress (GPC) Party bloc in the Parliament said that the dispute between the GPC and the opposition parties has taken its toll.
Mr. Al Barakani said that the Supreme Committee for Elections (SCE) has announced the registration period to be initiated in the first half of 2002, while it is already the second half of the year 2002 and no agreement was reached concerning the allocations of parties in the electoral committees. He expressed worries about losing time in useless debate and accused the opposition parties of crippling elections.
“We are committed to the SEC decision and we handed over our lists of participants in the committees while opposition parties are still creating more racket.” he said.
“The principle of allocation is illegal and selecting the committee members is the task of the SCE according to the constitution.” he added.
