Al-Qadhi</figcaption></figure></div></td></tr></table><b><i>Mohammed Al-Qadhi</i></b><br>On Saturday, the Sana'a Criminal Court concerned with terrorism, sentenced one al-Qaeda militant to death, while 14 others received prison terms of between 3 to 10 years, having been found guilty of forming an armed group and carrying out attacks on Yemeni and Western targets. The court run by Judge Ahmad al-Jermozi sentenced Hizam Mujali to death for killing a security man named Hamid Khasroof at a security checkpoint. <br>Five other al-Qaeda supporters, namely They were: Omar Saeed Hasan Jarallah, Fawzi al-Wajeeh, Mohammed Saeed Ali al-Amari, Fawzi Yahia al-Hababi, and Yasser Ali Salem (tried in absentia), received sentences of 10 years for bombing the French supertanker Limburg.<br>The judge, while reading the verdict, said these defendants were found guilty of participating in the October 2002 bombing of the Limburg oil tanker, which killed a Bulgarian crew member and spilled 90,000 barrels of oil into the port of Mukala.<br>The two brothers Fawaz al-Rabee and Abu Bakr al-Rabee were sentenced to 10 years in jail. The conviction of Fawaz al-Rabeiee, the ring leader, included the attack on the helicopter of the US Hunt Oil company, and the detonation of explosions at a building of the civil aviation authority. Al-Rabee also was fined $100,000 to compensate the civil aviation authority for damage to the building. He also participated in the murder of Khasroof.<br>The other five militants (Ibraheem Mohammed al-Huwaidi, Aref Saleh Ali Mujali, Mohammed Abdullah al-Dailami, Abdulghani Ali Hussein Kaifan, and Kasem Yahia al-Raimee) were sentenced to five years in prison. They were found guilty of plotting attacks against the US, French, UK, Cuban and German embassies, and plotting to assassinate former U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Edmund Hull, as well as intelligence officials.<br>The two defendants- Khaled Ahmad al-Jalob, and Saleem Mohammed Ali al-Dailami, were sentenced to three years in prison, for falsifying documents relating to the various attacks.<br>The verdicts included that the explosives (approximately half a ton) and weapons seized with the defendants, be confiscated. <br>The defendants strongly condemned and rejected the verdict, doubting the legitimacy of the court. Upon hearing the verdict, the 13 bearded men in blue prison dress, burst into cries of “God is great, America is the enemy of God, Osama bin Laden is God's beloved” from behind the bar. The defendant Yasser Ali Salem was tried in absentia, while Saleem Mohammed Ali al-Dailami was absent from the pronouncement of the verdict due to his sickness. All the defendants and their relatives appealed the verdicts.<br>The judge said while reading the verdict, that Abdulraheem al-Nashiri, first prime suspect of the USS Cole bombing (currently in the US custody), paid $40,000 to fund the Limburg attack. The explosives were bought by the former al-Qaeda leader Abu Ali al-Harithi and were transported from his house in Shabwa to Mukalla in Hadramut. Al-Harithi was killed by the CIA with a missile fired from a drone aircraft later in 2002.<br>Relatives of the defendants who were present in the courtroom condemned the verdicts, describing them as political. The courtroom saw hustle and bustle as the crowd of the defendants' relatives gathered around the bar, furiously criticizing the court. Father of defendant Abdulkareem Kaifan told Yemen Times “the verdict was already decided and the tribunal was just a decoration to pass the verdict.” While Saleh Mujali, father of Hizam who received death penalty, said, “The verdict is unjust and the agents are behind it.” The father of Fawaz al-Rabee said that there is no legal basis for the verdict as the defendants did not get enough legal protection. Advocate Faiz al-Hajori who was defending al-Wajeeh said, “the court did not pay attention to the defense we presented. The verdicts were based on evidences which were proved false.”<br>However, other observers had expected heavier verdicts for some defendants like Fawaz al-Rabee, a former employee at the Presidential office, and an al-Qaeda suspect wanted by the US government. However, they said that the process of the tribunal was full of mistakes and lapses, as the 12 suspects were left without defense. Advocates named by the defendants quit the trial twice in protest against the refusal of the court to provide them with a copy of investigation documents. Even the advocates appointed by the court did the same, for the same reason, leaving the defendants without a defense, which has shed doubts over the legitimacy of the tribunal despite the fact that some defendants admitted their guilt in the first hearing held on May 29th.<br>The verdict was issued amid the heavy security measures of the final session.<br />——<br />[archive-e:768-v:13-y:2004-d:2004-08-30-p:front] </div>
