March 15 1999

Today, the 15th of March, the Yemeni Journalist Syndicate (YJS) is holding its second general convention. This will be the fourth attempt by the YJS to find a way out of the current difficulties with its convention. Observers say the main reason for the failure of the syndicate lies in its inability to decide who will be directing it. It is well known that the political involvement in the syndicate is the main obstacle to forming a strong independent syndicate. Partisanship among journalists from different political backgrounds also plays a major role in its failure.
However, being almost totally controlled by the state, it is expected that this convention will face the same fate as the last one because identical circumstances still prevail. Many analysts and observers doubt that the syndicate will be honest in dealing with freedom of press and the latest PSO violations.
