AWO to empower Yemeni Women [Archives:2007/1054/Local News]

SANA'A, May 26 ) A Yemeni delegation headed by Rashidah Al-Hamdani, Chairperson of the Women National Committee (WNC) is participating in the third meeting of the Supreme Council of the Arab Women Organization (AWO). The meeting begun on Sunday in Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates, under the auspices of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, President of the Supreme Council of the Organization.

It is expected that the meeting will discuss the organization's plan for the years 2008 -2012, the evaluation of the previous plan, as well as, the joining of new Arab Countries to the organization.

Hooria Mashour, Vice-Chairperson of WNC, stated to Yemen Times that a presentation of a number of draft field studies on women as well as on economy, health, media, and education will be demonstrated in the meeting. She also indicated that this year's meeting will focus on the political empowerment of women and the legal reforms.

Further, she elaborated that “the most vital issues which will be highlighted by the new plan are the legal reforms in the Personal Status Laws of the Arab countries, empowering women socially, and looking into the Convention of Eliminating Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) from an Islamic Perspective.”

Al-Hamdani also participated in the sixth extraordinary meeting of the Executive Board of the Arab Women's Organization which took place between 24-25 May in Abu Dhabi. The meeting discussed procedures for cooperation with counterpart organizations in the region.

Additionally, the meeting discussed the Republic of the Sudan's proposal to add two articles on the agenda of the third meeting of the Supreme Council on the creation of a new vision to strengthen enforcement of the recommendations, follow-up meetings of the organization, evaluation of previous projects, as well as the AWO role towards Palestinian women prisoners and their children in Israeli jails.

It is worth mentioning that the Supreme Council meeting is held every two years with the participation of its former presidents and representatives from 14 Arab member countries.
