Capacity-building spotlighted in a workshop [Archives:2002/24/Local News]
The Deputy Minister of Planning & Development, Abdulrahman Tarmoom, inaugurated May 4 a UNDP-sponsored workshop on capacity-building for the Arab states at the Sheraton Hotel.
The workshop aimed at supporting the millennium summit, held in Sept. 2000 in Arab states, through building national capacities and using the summits reports for backing, coordinating and monitoring related works.
Its expected that experts of the UN and members of the teams in charge of drafting the 17-Arab countries millennium development objectives reports will finalize related works in cooperation with the local consultants and representatives of other UN agencies soon.
UN member countries committed to accomplishing 8 objectives by 2015 during the millennium summit in Sept. 2000. The objectives include among other things: eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, making basic education accessible to all worldwide, enhancing gender equity, empowering women, and developing a global partnership for development.
