Decision on Hunaish Next May [Archives:1998/08/Front Page]
The arbitration court on the disputed Hunaish Island has adjourned pending a decision on the sovereignty of the island. It is expected that a final and binding decision will be reached and announced on May 22, 1998.
The Island of Greater Hunaish was occupied by Eritrean armed forces towards the end of 1995. Instead of resorting to a military solution which could have destabilized the security and stability of the region, Yemen decided to submit the whole issue to international arbitration. Both sides have agreed to abide by the international court’s decision. Yemen has submitted a well-studied, fully documented case, which testifies to the legality of its claim over the island.
