Demonstrators make their point [Archives:2002/16/Front Page]
SANAA — Yemeni security police showed their muscle to prevent demonstrators from approaching the US Embassy compound in Sana’a Friday.
Some demonstrators were reportedly injured during the police operation to disburse the crowds.
However, a representative of the crowd was allowed to approach the embassy to give a statement of the Yemen Anti-normalization Committee to the US ambassador.
The ambassador refused to meet the demonstrator’s representative.
The statement expressed the outrage of the Yemeni public about the current war perpetrated against Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Territories.
The statement also condemned the stance of Arab leaders.
“The official stance of the Arab regimes towards the current Zionist war against the Palestinians is one high treason, the statement said, adding that the visit of the US Secretary of State, Collin Powell, to the region is part of a conspiracy against the Palestinian issue.
The statement also called for expelling the American Ambassador form Sana’a and canceling any kind of official cooperation with the US government for its biased stance towards Israel.
The statement praised Iraq for halting the export of oil, and called other Arab states to follow Iraq in using oil as a weapon.
