Dhale’ in Turmoil [Archives:1998/23/Local News]
It started as a stupid argument between a couple of citizens and the soldiers at a checkpoint in Dhale’. The soldiers fired, killing one of the citizens, and injuring the other. That was on Thursday 4th June.
Instead of starting an interrogation with the trigger-happy soldiers, the military camp nearby was mobilized. All of a sudden, there was a military showdown between the Zubaidi villages in Dhale’ and the camp.
Now it is quickly degenerating into a full-scale confrontation between the whole region and the state.
Here again is a situation in which the army behaves like a tribe – protecting some of its own even when they are wrong.
