Ethiopian Embassy Replies [Archives:1998/03/Local News]

The Ethiopian Embassy would like to react to the information conveyed in the January 12th 1998 issue on page 2 entitled “Illegal Immigrants Pour into Yemen.” As opposed to the presentation on this issue there is not civil war and political strife in Ethiopia at this time. The reported illegal immigrants do come from Ethiopia purely in pursuit of better economic opportunities. Such migration is a worldwide phenomenon, indeed. Besides, the Embassy has been monitoring the situation constantly and to this effect has maintained continuos touch with the concerned Yemen authorities in order to facilitate the repatriation mechanism. The insertion, “… the embassy officials of the countries have not been involved,” is unfortunately wrong on your side as far as Ethiopian embassy is concerned.
