Surveys are being conducted to uncover the areas where desert locusts multiply during winter. Efforts are concentrated in the area extending from Midi in Hajja to the Abyan shores. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has already warned countries in the Middle East, especially those overlooking the Red Sea. Surveys indicate that locusts are already multiplying fast on the coastal region between Sudan and Eritrea. The swarm can very well cross the Red Sea into Yemen and Saudi Arabia, FAO sources said.
