The appointment of a spokesman comes after a controversy between foreign media correspondents and the government.
Journalists have been harassed and teased in various ways. They have been accused of being agents who work against their country. The government has been annoyed by their reports. Journalists have complained against shortage of information and the refusal of officials to speak to reporters.
Last Tuesday, the Yemeni government appointed Naser Taha Mustafa, Chief of Saba News Agency, the official spokesman of the government.
He is expected to give briefings and statements that reflect the governments positions towards local, regional and international events.
Mr. Mustafa is a well-known journalist who has worked for the press for over 20 years. He is an outstanding writer and political analyst as well as the chairman for the Rights and Liberties Department at the Yemeni Journalist Syndicate.
