Hadi nominated as secretary-general of the GPC [Archives:2008/1207/Local News]

SANA'A, Nov. 11 ) President Ali Abdullah Saleh, head of the ruling General People's Congress (GPC), disclosed a proposal to admit two parties from the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) to the membership of the Supreme Committee for Election and Referendum (SCER) and one assistant secretary-general through a dialogue chaired by Rashad Al-Alimi deputy prime minister for security and defense affairs and Abdul Qader Hila, Minister of Local Administration.

Saleh confirmed in an exceptional session for the members of the GPC's Permanent Committee yesterday that the upcoming parliamentary elections would be held as scheduled, on 27 April 2009. He renewed his call to political parties to conduct a constructive dialogue that abides by the national principles, constitution and law.

During the session, GPC elected Abdu Rabu Mansoor Hadi, vice president, as GPC secretary -general. The GPC's former secretary-general was elected as vice-head of the GPC.

The exceptional session discussed yesterday the political report of the GPC general secretariat offered by the GPC acting secretary general, Abdul Rahman Al-Akwa and the assistant secretary general Ahmed Obaid bin Deghr. It also discussed the government report about the economic situation, effects of the global financial crisis, the damage of flash floods in Hadramout and Al-Maharah, and the procedures taken to offer relief for the affected people.

Head of the Political Development Forum, Ali Saif Hasan said in a statement to the Yemen Times with regard to the new GPC decisions that the political movement in Yemen is almost not working, pointing out that the president's initiative came to “fuel”” it in order to work. He considered that the ball is now in the JMP's court.
