Human rights in Yemen may be improving, but they still have a way to go, according to participants at the Human Rights: More than Politics seminar held at the Yemen Times April 28 and 29.
It focused on the true meaning of Human Rights, which exceed the boundaries of political rights to include social, educational, health, cultural, environmental, and other rights.
The seminar was inaugurated with a welcome speech and a working paper by Mr. Walid Abdulaziz al-Saqqaf, Editor-in-Chief of the Yemen Times on the need for explaining the true meaning of human rights as something that goes beyond political talk.
He highlighted the importance of focusing on the real meaning of human rights, and said that the United States and the other countries lack of concern of human rights violations in Palestine should not give any excuse to forget about basic human rights principles.
Human rights are all noble principles. They arent associated with one religion, race or whatsoever. Yet, Islam has given this issue a top priority, he said.
