Information Minister Al-Akwa’a: “We are drafting a law to allow private radio/tv transmissions.” [Archives:1997/52/Front Page]
Mr. Abdul-Rahman Al-Akwa’a, Minister of Information, told Yemen Times that his ministry is working on a draft of a law that would enable local and foreign private entities to own and/or operate radio and television stations in Yemen. This step will further enhance press freedom and plurality of ideas and political thoughts in the country as it will break government monopoly. However, the minister did not specify when this will happen. The Yemen Times had applied during 1996 to start an FM radio station in Sanaa, but was denied license. It will re-apply once the law is enacted. The BBC and other international radio stations are reported to have shown interest in re-broadcasting from Yemen.
