Hajah Khiria is famous in her neighborhood. It's her knowledge of traditional medicine that brings her fame – she is one of many folk therapists in Yemen who use old techniques to cure. She said she cured many diseases doctors failed to treat. Her diagnosis is based on observation – a visual test which includes examining sore area and then deciding the treatment which is mostly unwritten and transmitted orally. Her best treatment is “healthy food.”
Folk medicine refers collectively to procedures traditionally used for treatment of illness and injury, aid to childbirth, and maintenance of wellness.
Hajah Khiria, 57, is married and mother of three sons and five daughters. She said she learned the medical folk recipes from her 130 year-old grandmother.
