Members of the British parliament visit Yemen [Archives:2004/735/Local News]

A delegation of the British parliament, headed by Mr. Keith Vaz Mp, is currently visiting Yemen. The delegation emphasized, during their meeting with president Saleh, the strong relationship UK enjoys with Yemen. They also expressed their admiration for the Yemeni effort in fighting terrorism, and meanwhile hoping that their visit will open new channels of communication between the two countries.
In an exclusive statement to Yemen Times, The delegation, which has also met with head of the Shoura Council, minister of foreign affairs and members of the parliament, stressed that partnership will be the base of the Yemeni-British- relationship. The team stated also their intention of asking the British government to lift the sanctions on British citizen who want to visit Yemen.
As to current affairs, the delegation expressed the official British condemnation of the immoral treatment of Iraqi captives in Abu-Gharib prison, indicating the British government's intention of sending to military courts soldiers responsible for such acts.
Meanwhile, the team conveyed their hope that Yemen can assume leadership of the region, as a true democratic voice, pointing out to the fact that such leadership will grant Yemen the support of the British government.
The team said that on May 26th, a festival called “Yemen Festival” will be organized in the British Parliament and will be attended by 50 members of the parliament and 200 distinguished personalities of the Yemeni community in UK.
