New US Ambassador presents credentials [Archives:2004/765/Front Page]
The new ambassador of the United States of America to Yemen, Thomas Charles Krajeski, presented his credentials to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Sunday, August 15th in a formal ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Sana'a. The previous day, the Ambassador had addressed the American and local employees of the U.S Embassy.
Thomas Charles Krajeski was sworn in as U.S Ambassador to Yemen on July 30th, 2004. His most recent assignment was as the Director of the Office of Northern Gulf Affairs (Iran and Iraq) in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. From July to October 2003, he served as a political advisor on Ambassador Bremer's staff in Baghdad. Prior to that assignment, Mr. Krajeski was the Principle Officer and Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Dubai. He was an active member of the American Business Council of Dubai, assisting the more than 350 American companies that have offices or regional headquarters in the commercial capital of the Arabian Gulf region.
Since entering the Foreign Service in June 1979, Mr. Krajeski has served at the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal (1980-82); as chief of the consular section in Madras, India (1982-84); in the State Department Press Office (1985); and as the deputy chief of the consular section in Warsaw, Poland (1985-88).
In 1988, Mr. Krajeski returned to Washington for an assignment as the political desk officer on the India Desk. He followed this assignment with a stint as a senior watch officer in the Operations Center during the first Gulf War.
Following two years of Arabic language studies at the Foreign Service Institute, he was assigned to the political section at the U.S Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, where he handled the “Middle East Peace Process” portfolio and attended the first bilateral Israeli-Palestinian negotiating sessions in Taba, Egypt. He continued to monitor and report on the negotiations of the Gaza-Jericho Agreement and subsequent agreements until 1997.
Mr. Krajeski was born and raised in Groveland, Massachusetts. Before joining the Foreign Service, he studied Russian language and literature at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.He is married and has two daughters and a son. Mr. Krajeski's pastimes include tennis and golf. He reads and speaks Arabic and has varying degrees of competency in Persian, Polish, German, and Nepali.
