New US equipment for Yemens security is here [Archives:2002/20/Local News]

Albert Cland, US chief commander of special tasks forces arrived in Yemen, Wednesday, May 8..
He discussed with the Yemeni officials bilateral relations and cooperation between Yemen and the USA mainly on cracking down on terrorism.
The visit coincided with the announcement that the Yemeni interior ministry received electronic monitoring devices.
The devices which include computers and cameras will be installed this week.
The sophisticated monitoring system will link Yemeni air and sea ports and land crossing to a central office in Sanaa.
The US help to Yemen to computerize the immigration points of entry and exit is part of a terrorist interdiction program.
Yemeni official sources said a US military expert has made the recommendation that Yemen will need to establish a marine patrol police.
The US is trying to push other donors to chip in to pay for the effort.
The US officials are concerned that al-Qaeda members who have scattered across Asia following the defeat of their Taliban allies in Afghanistan may seek shelter in Yemen. Therefore it is important to aid Yemen.
Yemen is expected to need over 250 boats of night watch system to monitor its long coastline stretching 1500 km.
Germany, Holland, England and Suadi Arabia are to help in this effort. There are over 60 US military experts training Yemeni special tasks forces on how to launch a crack down on terrerists.
