Palestinian fundraising A big ripoff? [Archives:2002/18/Front Page]
Wheres the money The campaign to support the Palestinians has triggered heated accusations on the way they are being raised and delivered.
The Supreme Committee for Supporting Intifada has warned citizens not to donate a penny except through official committees and mosques.
The Islah Charitable Society denied that this warning was against it, as its secretary-general, Hameed Zaidan said that the warning is for individuals and not societies.
But, other analysts cast doubts on the transparency of the Supreme Committee for Supporting Intifada and accused it of cutting millions of riyals from government employees without giving reports on ways of disbursing it.
Many other individuals and societies have their own committees that raise funds for the Palestinians, including Sheikh Abdulah bin Hussein al-Ahmar, parliament speaker, and the Haq Party.
Even the traffic police and security collect donations.
Mosque Imams, on their part, raise money after each prayer.
