Possible release of Yemeni detainees in Guantanamo [Archives:2002/11/Front Page]
US authorities, according to some press reports, have promised to release a number of detainees including some Yemenis, held at Guantanamo base in Cuba.
These detainees were in Afghanistan since the Soviet occupation in 1990.
The moves comes prior to a regional tour of Vice-President Dick Chinny’s.
Thirty two Yemenis are currently detained at Guantanamo Bay, on charges of having links to al-Qaeda, led by the Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden.
Yemeni authorities sent two security officials, Abdulah al-Sirmi and Ali Mansur Rashid, late this month to the US to inspect the situation of the Yemeni detainees, however, US authorities denied them access to Guantanamo.
