The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, in cooperation with the UNDP and the International Labor Organizations regional office in Beirut, concluded the 1st training course for 35 participants on June 24 representing all the governorates across Yemen. The 9-day training course was attended by employees, managers and officials of .the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.
In a statement to the Yemen Times, Mr. Gazi Abdurab, the Manager of the National Labor Information System said that the main purpose of the course was to enable the labor offices in all the Yemeni governorates to work together to find solutions of high rate of unemployment.
The Ministrys employees who participate in the course have been trained to establish contacts among the regional labor offices and local businesses, organizations and institutions.
The very low educational level of Yemeni employees has remained a major problem for Yemeni job-seekers. This has become the attention focus of the Ministry of Technical Education to offer more vocational training courses for the jobless. It is hoped that This would help the unemployed to re-enter the domestic labor markets in some of the neighboring countries, Gazi added.
Mr. Abdurab stated that Yemeni law purposefully restricted the hiring of foreign labor so as to Yemenize jobs.
Unfortunately, the lack of trustworthy statistics on the labor market at present suggest that the Ministry of Labor couldnt make any effective plans to resolve problem of unemployment, Mr. Abdurab concluded.
