The US company Proctor & Gamble which started operations here in 1994 recently decided to close down in Yemen. P&Gs leadership said the company had experienced losses since the beginning. However, other sources have confirmed that the company had received threats from unknown groups.
Eyewitness told the Yemen Times they heard an exchange of gunfire between the companys guards and an unidentified group last week. Sources from the company said the decision to close down had been made after this incident.
While police intelligence are still investigating, sheikhs and other people living near the P&G grounds are being held in prison until attackers are identified.
P&G stressed that the companys products will continue to be exported to Yemen from other countries. The local partner company located in Taiz will become an agent for P&G products.
Other sources from P&G said the closure had nothing to do with boycotting. It was a decision made on low profits, they said.
They went on to say the 130 employees of P&G will be handsomely compensated for their services.
