Swedish Ambassador for Human Rights visits Yemen [Archives:2002/25/Local News]

The Parliamentarian Committee for Human Rights and Freedom organized a lunch party last Monday at the Al-Khaima restaurant in honor of the Swedish Ambassador for Human Rights and Swedish non-resident Ambassador to Yemen.
The Swedish Ambassador for Human Rights arrived in Yemen on Friday June 7 at the invitation of the State Minister of Human Rights.
She met with officials concerned with Human Rights and human rights activists.
Sheikh Mohammed Ben Naji al-Shaif, Chairman of the Parliamentarian Committee for Human Rights and Freedoms described their meeting as fruitful. The two sides exchanged information on the state of Human Rights in their respective countries.
She was also briefed on the responsibilities the committee shoulders as well as the regulations and legislation that help maintain the general awareness about human rights and freedoms in Yemen.
During the meeting she expressed the readiness of her country to support human rights in Yemen and to educate human rights activists in our country.
Al-Shaif said Human Rights are developing, despite the shortcomings that occur from time to time, from a lack of awareness about human rights and freedoms.
Besides a lack of understanding of the nature of the committees activities, he said there were certain people who tend to marginalize the committee and refuse to cooperate with it. However, he asserted that the committee would continue its noble mission to achieve its noble goals in protecting human rights and freedoms.
The party was attended by Dr. Abubakr al-Qirbi the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Wahiba Fare the State Minister for Human Rights , Mr. Ahmad Sufan the Minister of Planning and Development, Mr. Abdullah Ahmad Sufan the Secretary General of the Parliament, Chairmen of the Partisan Blocs at the Parliament and many others.
