Tar Balls Cover Tihama Coast [Archives:1997/52/Front Page]

It is all over the place. A dissipating layer of crude oil on the sea, and solidified tar balls thrown over to the Tihama shoreline extending 60 kms from Al-Fazah to Anbarah. A Yemen Times team visited the site and delivered a full file and samples to the authorities. The source of the problem seems to be oil tankers which clean their cargo tanks and spill polluted fluids into the sea. Protected by the extra safety of navigating in the no-man land between Yemeni and Eritrean posts (which face each other in a stand-off given the on-going dispute over the Hunaish Archipelago), the oil tankers act in near-total immunity.
