Teachers to Go on Strike [Archives:1998/07/Local News]

Teachers and educators all over the Republic of Yemen are preparing to go on strike if the government does not respond to their demands. They started on Saturday, February 7 to wear red badges, and distribute pamphlets calling for a partial strike – form 4th to 6th lesson – during 7 to 19 February. They are to go on a total strike from 24 to 28 February, and then on an indefinite strike as of March 1st. The teachers are demanding a 110% wage increase, which means an additional YR 8 billion to the general budget. The Ministry of Finance has suggested that the wage increase should be institute on 3 stages: 40% increase this year, 30% next year, and 30% in the year 2000.
