On the occasion of the First International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Human Rights Day the United Nations System in Yemen and the National Center for Human Rights & Democratic Development organized a workshop on November 25 at the Police Officers Club.
The workshop was permeated with speeches delivered by representatives of organizations, centers and unions participating in the event. Mr. James W. Rawley, UN Resident Coordinator delivered a speech thanking participants for coming to celebrate with the United Nations System in Yemen and the National Center for Human Rights and Democratic Development, Human Rights Day and the 52nd Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
He said that since the birth of the United Nations in 1945, there has been increasing recognition of the fact that the enjoyment of human rights is essential for the well-being and development of the individual, the community, the nation and the world. The UN system has developed great efforts to mainstream the concept of human rights in all its development activities. The existence of poverty constitutes a denial of human rights. Thus by helping to develop the anti-poverty capacity of governments and civil society organizations, the UN is fostering the implementation of the right to development, which is one of the foundations of human rights.
The UN advocates the realization of human rights as part of sustainable human development, an approach that places people at the center of all promotion of human dignity and the realization of all human rights; economic, social, cultural, civil and political.
Also, the 52th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights coincides with the first ever observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The linkage between these two events is clear.
On this Day the UN Secretary – General has called upon the international community to raise public awareness of this global scourge in all its forms, and to ensure that wherever it occurs, it should be met with condemnation. The elimination of violence against women is the responsibility of all: the United Nations family, Member States, civil society and individual women and men.
Mr Rawley paid tribute to the fact that Yemen is a signatory to virtually all human rights treaties and conventions, praising the progress it has achieved in the human rights field. The event was attended by minister of interior Dr Hussein Arab, Information undersecretary Ahmed Nasser Hamati, Chairman of Journalists Union Mahboub Ali and Chairman of the National Committee for Woman Rashida Al-Hamadani.
