UNDP Channels $ 877,000 to Demining Program [Archives:2001/36/Local News]

Yemen and UNDP signed last Wednesday an extension of UNDP’s on-going support to the National Demining Program of $ 877,000 out of which, $710,000 will be forth coming from the government of the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, and Sweden while the remaining amount will be provided by UNDP.
This amount will be used for mine clearance in new areas as highlighted by the results of the level one survey, field surveys, prevention action and victim support, mine awareness and strengthening of national capacity to plan, coordinate and implement mine action activities.
These contributions build upon the $ 1.7 million already provided to earlier phases of the UNDP mine action support project by these governmental and UNDP, as well as by Japan, USA, Norway and Switzerland.
National Demining Committee said sometime ago that 42,000 mines fields had been damaged after the civil war of 1994. The National Demining Committee also damaged February, 2000 5050 anti-personnel mines. Several people have been killed, others disabled by mines in Yemen.
