SANA'A, Jan 19 ) In a pre-launch session with Yemen Times media, Naseem Al-Rehman, UNICEF-Yemen Communications and Information Chief, explained that UNICEF's State of World's Children Report 2008 focuses on child survival. The report provides strategies for decision makers and governments on how to increase child survival, and explores the myths that increase the risks of child mortality.

Rehman explained the global context of child survival in the neo-natal period for newborn infants and for children under five. He also reflected on the local issues that increase the child mortality rate in Yemen, and urged journalists to tackle this issue as a priority.

“It is your role as a journalist to convey a message. You are responsible for learning about the situation and for doing something about it,” he stated to journalists.

In his presentation, he discussed primary health care, and the various circles where health care affects child survival. He later dedicated his time for questions from Yemen Times journalists.

The State of World's Children Report 2008 national launch will take place Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Taj Sheba Hotel at 9:00 am. The launch is under the patronage of Minister of Public Health and Population Abdulkareem Rase'a, who will give the keynote address.

The launch includes presentations from UNICEF- Yemen and the Higher Council for Motherhood and Childhood, media outlets and religious leaders on promoting child survival. It will also include a short sketch performed by Yemeni Artists' Forum for Children on child survival, and a session on children's perspective on child survival presented by a member of Children's Parliament.
