Violence against women still practiced [Archives:2003/673/Local News]
Sana'a, Sept 30_ To spotlight more on different kinds of violence against women, Civic Democratic Initiatives Support Foundation (CDF) held on Monday 29 September a workshop entitled “The victims of violence and the society mistrust” that took place at Mercure Hotel, Sana'a.
The workshop focused on three main dimensions; woman absence, murdering of woman and the problems of getting married from foreigners.
Ms. Fatihia Abdualwasea and Ms Khena Mekdad, lawyers, presented two working papers centering on all the kinds of violence against woman, discriminative laws especially the nationality law that has economically and socially affected woman and her children.
Ms. Bahria Shamsheer, chairperson of woman and child development at GTZ, displayed the painful effects of getting married to foreigners and obstacles the mother and her children have been facing as she has gone through this experience herself.
The participants called for enacting laws relevant to the situation and amending some the laws clearly expressing discrimination as well as building awareness among women and men alike about their rights granted by religion and the constitution. She also demanded issuing laws and drawing up programs and projects to limit violence against women.
A number of lawyers, representatives of civil society organizations and media attended the workshop and enriched it with their comments.
