What peace can the strong give? [Archives:2002/20/Focus]
BUSHRA AL-MAQTARI
FOR THE YEMEN TIMES
The US-sponsored peace in the Middle East is one of the ambiguous games of the present US administrations. This is more evident with the current war of extermination waged by the Israeli war machine against the Palestinians. Nevertheless the current war is perpetrated with the consent of the US government, which tries always to find excuses for the Israelis.
Since the current US government came to power, it has been threatening the world with its anti-terror war. The September 11 attacks were only the green light for her to go ahead in its campaign. Yet, the success achieved in Afghanistan has encouraged it to lay the groundwork for another assaults on other countries.
The US government seems to be sure that the most outrageous crimes Israel may commit in the Palestinian territories will not move a finger of Arabs. The US-sponsored peace is rather a different peace because its a peace of the strong. This has made the Israelis dictate their own terms relying on the USs support. The Israeli occupation forces have been blitzing the Palestinian cities in an unprecedented manner. Apparently, the United States is more eager to impose the Israeli terms on the Palestinians depending on their own muscles.
A closer look to the US-brokered peace under the current circumstances will reveal that despite the fact that it has been usually hailed as peace-lover, it is rather a wolf in sheeps clothing. Further, the consequent US governments have dealt with the peace process in the Middle in ways that favor their interests along with the Zionist state.
The former American administration led by Bill Clinton strove to reinforce the concept of fragile peace that only aimed at containing conflicts. It had tried to bring about a state of peace and no-peace, keeping its hand on the steering wheel.
The United States has, with its freak understanding for peace, been able to protect its interests around the world. This is by showing itself as a peace advocate in the region and absorbing the anger of the Palestinians and Arabs in general.
All the massacres committed against the Palestinians in the Jinin refugee camp and Bethlehem have made it much clearer that the US-sponsored peace is illusion.
The peace of the strong on the weak is a big lie.
