Prospects
A special workshop on the role of Socotra women in developing the island was held at the University of Aden during 14-16 December. The workshop – jointly organized by the University of Aden, the Dutch Embassy, the UNDP, and the UNPF – was attended by several researchers, officials and a number of people from the island of Socotra. The main issues discussed were concerned with female education, the effects of the island’s climate on women’s health, bee keeping, sustainable exploitation of natural resources, the hard chores done by women and their social role. This workshop, which comes following the earlier (April 1996) workshop, aims to enhance cooperation between the University of Aden and the authorities responsible for the development of the island. The workshop called for field surveys to be conducted to ascertain the extent of social problems facing women, and to recommend training courses to help raise women’s awareness of their social and economic problems.
