Yemen, France Sign Aid Protocol [Archives:2001/07/Local News]
Planning and Development minister Ahmed Soufan and the French ambassador to Yemen signed in Sana’a on February 5, a protocol on the mechanism of spending funds of the French food aid offered to Yemen. The amount of this year’s assistance is estimated at YR 140 million allocated for financing a number of agricultural development projects.
The majority of the projects agreed upon by both the Yemeni ministry of planning and development and the French embassy are related to the irrigation sector. They are specified for building dams and reservoirs for the purpose of irrigating planted areas. Part of the aid fund is allotted for supporting production of Yemeni coffee.
Every year since 1983 France has been offering food assistance to Yemen consisting of fine wheat flour. Since 1992 40,000 tons of flour has been offered and 2500 tons of this amount has been distributed free of charge in Socotra island.
