On Thursday, the 1st of June the Mahweet Primary Court sentenced a policeman to 10 years in jail for torturing to death Mohamed Al-Kawkabani, held on theft charges. The sentence is a good mark for the country. It was the first conviction in a case involving torture in Yemen.
The court also sentenced two soldiers to up to five years in prison for participating in the tortures, which lasted three days.
The court ordered the officer to pay up to three million rials ($19,000) in “blood money” to the victim’s family. The sentences will be reviewed by an appeals court.
