YJS Launches Solidarity Campaign with Palestinian Journalists [Archives:2001/47/Local News]

aThe Yemeni Journalist Syndicate (YJS) launched last Wednesday, a solidarity campaign with the Palestinian journalists at the Press Center in Sana’a. Chairman of the YJS and Head of the Palestine Committee of the Arab Journalists Federation, Mr. Mahboob Ali, delivered a speech in which he stressed that the Palestinian issue has entered a dangerous turning point in its history.
Mr. Na’aym al-Tuyassi, Chairman of the Palestinian Journalist Syndicate, expressed his appreciation of the stance of Yemeni journalists and people, who have been always on the side of the Palestinian people. Mr. al-Tuyassi also declared the establishment of a press center in Jerusalem so as to play a role in supporting the Palestinian cause, adding that the starting point of this center was from Yemen through raising donations for the Palestinian people. On his part, Foreign Minster, Dr. Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, condemned in his words, “the Israeli terrorism” and stressed the necessity of making Israel adhere to international law, adding that the government committee has so far raised roughly YR 600 million for supporting the Palestinian people.
Similarly, Mr. Waleed Abdulaziz al-Saqqaf delivered a speech on behalf of the independent newspapers in which he stressed the important role that the Arab media can play in communicating the views of Arabs, particularly in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Mr. Waleed al-Saqqaf also highlighted the role of the official media in reporting the views of the public about the current events in the Middle East in ways that favorably influence the US public. “Yemen Times, as a weekly English paper, tries vigorously to report the Israeli atrocities to the whole world,” Waleed al-Saqqaf added. Yemen Times donated YR 200,000 to the Palestinian journalists, while the YJS is still collecting donations, which presently total US$10,000.
