Sana'a, June 10, The ministers' council discussed the memorandum presented by Dr. Mohammed Al-Maflahi, Minister of Culture, on treating the current situation of Historical Zabeed City including preservation particularly constructional developments which threaten the city.
In last Tuesday's meeting, the ministers' council approved the formation of a committee headed by the Minister of Culture and includs, as member, Minister of Public Works and Roads, Minister of Tourism, Minister of Local Administration, and Al-Hodaidah University Rector.
The committee is to study the preserving requirements including a proposal concerned with the construction of the new city of Zabeed in a proper constructional layout, providing the necessary requirements for services. Also, it should present a report, to the Cabinet, on the reached findings in order to be discussed and ratified.
It is worth mentioning that a team of the UNISCO, headed by Mr.Danial , the organization consultant, had paid a visit to Zabeed City. The team met with the chairman of the local council along with the concerned executive members as well as a number of representatives of the civil society organizations to assess the current situations of the Historical city of Zabeed and the methods of preserving the city.
The city, which is in the International Heritage list, is threatened of losing its legacy. As a matter of fact, a report, submitted by international observing team for preserving historical places and sites, informed the International Heritage Council about the painful findings of the visit.
However, the UNISCO has given Yemen a last chance to avoid issuing a resolution to drop Zabeed City from the International Heritage list. So, Yemen can exert the utmost, during the given period, to implement a comprehensive strategy aiming at protecting the city from deterioration and to remove all the shortcomings that negatively affect the architectural scene of the city.
In conclusion, the organization specified two programs for Yemen to rescue the city and to keep it listed in the International Heritage list. The first will last for one year while the second one will be executed in two years under the direct supervision of the International Organization. Moreover, the organization will delegate experts to Yemen every six months to insure the implementation of this plan.
