Is the road to hell paved with good intentions? I raise this question in response to those political pundits who claim Israel has “overreacted” to recent attacks by Hezbollah and Hamas – Arab militant groups backed by Syria and Iran. Israel's critics obviously fail to appreciate that these militant groups won't rest until they exterminate Israel – or are exterminated themselves. That's the very harsh truth.

Calls are being made for U.N. involvement, including deployment of U.N. peacekeepers. I agree that the international community can help, but they should begin by trying to convince Syria and Iran to honor Israel's sovereignty and stop supporting Arab militants bent on Israel's destruction.

For nearly 60 years, Israel has fought fiercely to defend its right to exist as sanctioned by international law. Israel has made a good faith effort to make peace with Arabs living in the West Bank, the Golan Heights and Gaza, but the conflict continues.

In the recent past, a unique political solution was proposed to end the seemingly endless bloodshed – the Elon Peace Plan. The plan called for Israel to annex the Golan Heights, West Bank and Gaza and create a massive DMZ (buffer zone) along its Lebanese border. In my opinion, the Elon Peace Plan deserves a fresh look and should be considered very seriously. I'm convinced that the recent efforts to achieve a two-state solution in Israel, though well-intentioned, isn't the answer – it's the road to hell.
