The United Nations confirmed its support for the initiative made by Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to conduct multiple political reforms and develop the democratic system in his country, the ruling party's mouthpiece reported. It quoted Flavia Pensieri, Resident Representative of UN Development Program in Yemen, as saying that Saleh's initiative will have an effective impact in supporting the local and democratic governance at the domestic level. She affirmed that implementing Mr. President's initiative will be an important and historic occasion for UN in order to increase its support for Yemen and help boost progress of local governance and partnership at the national level.

She pointed out that the international organization will be a partner with the Yemeni government in enhancing decentralization, explaining that decentralization is one of the most significant components in President Saleh's political platform and that UN will support such a move. Pensieri ascertained that Yemen has reached remarkable progress in the area of local authority and governance. “Over the past four years, UNDP expended great efforts in strengthening local governance benefiting from its previous experiences in the field of enhancing decentralization,” she went on to say.
