Article Summary:
Women & the Media in Yemen
The Yemeni media largely reflects society’s traditions and customs. Despite the expansion in female education and their participation in the workforce, society in general still views women as inferior. Although declared media policies give a lot of attention to women issues, such policies are seldom fully implemented. Newspapers and TV programs concentrate on fashion, new food recipes, and other frivolous matters at the expense of more serious women’s concerns. Thus, the Yemeni media is distancing women from the social development process.
