The newspaper's economic editor says in an article that economic experts expect that in the coming years Yemen would witness much deterioration in the purchasing power of the Yemeni currency and feverish spiral rise in prices and drop in levels of income and spending. The editor says the economic indicators have reflected that the Yemeni economy is running towards general collapse and rise in proportion of unemployment and inflation as well as retreat in the per capita income. A working paper presented by Dr Amin al-Haddad on the economic reality of the Yemeni family he has pointed out that the Yemeni family living conditions during the period 1992-98 has deteriorated greatly as a result of many factors among which is the government adoption of a program of economic reform that reflected negative impact and created new circumstances and factors led to the spread of poverty phenomenon among the families and consequently it has become a chronic phenomenon. Economic studies and indicators make it clear that Yemen is lacking justice in income and income distribution among the population. One fifth of the population of least income gain 6% of the gross income while one fifth of those of higher income get 49% of the income. Indicators also pointed out the existence of great variance in income distribution between families and this means that policies governing he economic activity work growingly for redistribution of income in favour of rich families at the expense of the great majority of families.
