Article Summary:
Influential People & Investment – editorial
The President has issued strict directives preventing military and security personnel from interfering, in any capacity, with investment projects. Such interference has been a major impediment for local and foreign investments in Yemen for the last few years. Some senior military and security officers have made it their business to blackmail investors, and force them to enter into partnerships with them in return for protecting the investors’ interests. This state of affair has convinced many an investor that the law of the land cannot provide them with enough protection.
The interference of the military and security people have led to widespread corruption in these two vital government organs, thus diverting their members from carrying out their actual duties. Such influences have not been small. Huge profits have been made, making it quite hard to eradicate the problem.
